Adolf and Maria Althof owned a circus. When a half-Jewish girl named Irene came to the circus to ask for shelter, she was not turned down. Once the rest of Irene’s family came asking for the same thing, Adolf welcomed them in so he would not feel like a murderer. He was never caught except once when a circus member may have given away information. Luckily, he was able to distract the officers with a drink while the Irene and her family hid.
