MLK Quotes 1/20/15

MLK Quotes

Read the quotes below, all spoken by Martin Luther King.  Then, comment on which one you like the best and why.  If you know of other quotes by MLK and want to comment with those, that is fine, too.  Just make sure you write why you like it.

MARTIN LUTHER KING QUOTES

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.

Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase

The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.

A man who won't die for something is not fit to live

I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.

In the End, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.

He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.

We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies.

The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education.

  3. My favorite quote is "Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase". I think that this means that even though you don't know how something will end you need to tak ethe first step to get there. This quote describes taking the leap of faith to get to a great outcome in the end.

  4. “Somebody told a lie one day. They couched it in language. They made everything black ugly and evil. Look in your dictionary and see the synonyms for the word black. It’s always something degrading, low, and sinister. Look at the word white. It’s always something pure, high, and clean. Well I wanna get the language right, tonight.”

He is rarely quoted on this one but I feel like it's one of his best

  7. My favorite comment is "Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase.", because it's just like a leap of faith. You just have to trust that you are going to be safe, and if it ends badly, then you just have to accept that you made a miscalculation. You just have to trust.

  8. A man who won't die for something is not fit to live
a true quote because if you have nothing to die for, you have nothing to live for either, without something to live for, what is the purpose of living?

  10. If you can't fly, run
    If you can't run, walk
    If you can't walk, crawl
    but whatever you do
    do not stop moving forward.

  11. I like the second quote on the blog. I like it because it is one of the few quotes that happened the way MLK wanted.
